Information about phonics

Throughout Year 1, children will be focusing on Phase 5 of the school's Letters and Sounds phonics scheme.  They will be taught to recognise and use alternative ways of pronouncing the graphemes and spelling the phonemes already taught.

Children will use alternative ways of pronouncing the graphemes (e.g. the ‘c’ in coat and city). Children will also be taught to recognise an increasing number of high frequency words automatically and knowledge and skills of phonics will be the prime approach to reading and spelling.

If you would like to practice some phonic sounds with your child at home, you can use the phonics sound mats below to help them improve.
